We understand that the sustainability of the world's environment is inextricably linked to the sustainability of our own competitive advantage. Take a look at a few of the practices, policies and procedures we've adopted to lower our costs — and our impact on the environment.
Leggett's Energy-Efficiency Initiatives
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curtail energy consumption, we have:
- Replaced inefficient lamps and ballasts with highly efficient components
- Installed new energy-efficient high-output fluorescent fixtures
- Introduced motion-sensor lighting into warehouse operations
- Moved from forklifts to conveyor systems and from golf carts to bicycles
- Engaged in off-peak energy consumption programs
Leggett's Recycling Initiatives
To minimize our ecological footprint, we recycle an array of materials:
- Steel and aluminum scrap from production
- Paint powder and chrome plating solution
- Wood fiber, sawdust, wood off-fall and cardboard
- Waste oil from machinery and forklifts
- Office paper, computer printouts and printer cartridges
- Aluminum soft drink cans from lunchrooms
Leggett's Sustainability Initiatives
We've discovered numerous additional opportunities to improve environmental performance, which include:
- Purchasing packaging materials with recycled content
- Using recycled materials for MRO
- Repurposing of sheetrock and off-fall for crating
- Enforcing a "no-idling" policy in our shipping yards
- Specifying low VOC coatings
- Employing sophisticated technology to maximize material use, leading to a significant reduction of scrap
Through the green practices we already have in place, we have accomplished a great deal — but we're just getting started. We are committed to finding new opportunities to reduce waste, improve efficiencies and do our part to ensure a cleaner, healthier and more beautiful environment.
Our green initiative is just part of a company-wide focus on the environment. Be sure to check Leggett & Platt's corporate environmental and energy stewardship plan.
